Letter from David Minihan

I wanted to take this time and introduce myself.  I cannot tell you how excited and honored I am to become the new Director of Tennis at Kickingbird.  I know I have some big shoes to fill, but I'm up for the challenge!

A little background about me....I am married to my beautiful wife, Lisa Minihan.  We have two daughters, Aspen (14) and Chloe (10) who both play tennis.  Before Kickingbird, I previously spent 21 years at Westwood Tennis Center in Norman, OK in the same position.  In 2007 Westwood was awarded the USTA National Outstanding Facility.  One thing that I have alway taken pride in is developing Westwood into a true community tennis center offering programs for all ages and levels including a strong working relationship with school tennis.

Lisa and I are very involved with USTA.  I have served as the USTA Oklahoma Executive Director for the past three years along with many volunteer positions through the past 20 years.  My wife has served as our USTA Oklahoma President and currently is on the USTA Missouri Valley Board serving as First Vice-President.

My life outside of tennis is golf and doing various activities with my girls.  I love spending time with my family.  It is one of the greatest joys of my life.  We enjoy vacationing, most recently visiting the Boston area along with a stop at the International Tennis Hall of Fame.  We also visit New York every year (a family tradition) to attend USTA meetings along with trips to the US Open.

Enhancements at Kickingbird!
If you have visited Kickingbird within the last 7 days, you have probably noticed a substantial change.  We have added new modern furniture that we feel has opened up the clubhouse.  We also added four advertising monitors that will display all of our up-and-coming programs.

One thing that is extremely important to me is that our teaching staff all become USPTA certified.  This will allow them to continue their education in understanding all the new and latest techniques in coaching our customers.  We are sending one of our teaching professionals for Cardio Tennis training later this week and two other pros will be heading to Kansas City late February for a USPTA Workshop.

I am so excited about all of the programs we will be offering our adult customers.  Look for more open drills coming in March.  We are launching three Cardio Tennis classes the week of January 23rd!  Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-11am and Saturday from 8-9am.  Call us to learn more about CT!  Also, look for more socials.  I call these fun events "Hit-and-Giggle" socials which is a great way to get to know everyone.

As USTA Missouri Valley Youth Progression Chair, it is extremely important to me that our junior players are training with the correct ball, racket and court size.  USTA has rules and regulations regarding what ball a player must play with when competing in a sanction tournament.  It is our job as instructors to prepare your child for those events.  It is vital that we don't rush our players out of a ball color when they are not ready for the next ball color.  Even Roger Federer competed and trained with low compression balls.

Two junior classes that we are working on implementing in the near future is a Tiny Tots class for ages 3-4 and a Home School program for ages 5 and up.  If you are interested in either of these classes, please let me know!

In conclusion, I would like to encourage you to visit our new website at www.kbtenniscenter.com and follow us on Facebook at Kickingbird Tennis.  We will be very active with social media as a source of advertising our programs and want to make sure all of you are connected to our new programming!

Thanks again and I look forward in meeting all of you!

David Minihan, USPTA
